Monster Apple Bites
Silly apple "monster mouths" with marshmallow teeth and a strawberry tongue. Nut-free with sunflower seed butter, about $0.45 each.
Every kid loves a goofy monster face, and this one is mostly fruit. No oven, no knives for the kids, and they are done in 15 minutes.
A quick tip for parents
Give each child a "monster kit" on a plate and ask them to name their monster. It turns snack time into a story, which is perfect before a cozy bedtime.
Allergens and swaps
Allergy-friendly note (Teal Pumpkin Project): A teal pumpkin on the porch tells trick-or-treaters you have non-food treats or allergy-safe options. Nut-free as written. Mini marshmallows usually contain gelatin; use a vegan marshmallow if needed. Check sunflower seed butter labels for shared-facility warnings.
Ingredients
- 2 apples (red or green, each cut into 8 wedges)
- 1/3 cup sunflower seed butter
- 1/4 cup mini marshmallows
- 4 strawberries (sliced)
- 16 candy eyes (optional)
- 1 squeeze lemon juice (keeps apples from browning)
Method
- Toss the apple wedges with a little lemon juice.
- Cut a small wedge out of the skin side of each apple slice to make a smiling mouth, or simply pair two wedges together.
- Spread sunflower seed butter on the inside of each mouth.
- Press a row of mini marshmallows in as teeth.
- Tuck a strawberry slice in as the tongue.
- Stick on candy eyes with a dab of sunflower seed butter and serve right away.
Notes from the kitchen
- Sunflower seed butter keeps these nut-free for school parties.
- Pre-slice apples and store them in water with a squeeze of lemon for up to a day.
What can replace marshmallows?
Slivers of jicama, pear, or white cheese make great teeth.
